Chapter 8

When the paramedic returned to check Sarah’s vitals again, Aidan left to talk to his partner, and Dre stepped away to call her father. After quickly explaining the situation, she wasn’t the least bit surprised when he insisted she immediately book a flight and head back home.

Dre moved farther away from the parked ambulance. “I can’t, Dad. Sarah needs me. If you saw how vulnerable she is, you’d—”

“She’s playing you,” Rich Morgan interrupted. “Sarah’s a master manipulator.”

Dre wished he was wrong, but knew he wasn’t. She turned away and lowered her voice. “Mom thinks someone’s trying to kill her, and I’m afraid she may be right.”

A pause followed. “If it’s that serious, I’m coming out there myself. I’ll call the airlines and get the first flight out.”

She rubbed at her forehead, feeling a headache coming on. “The authorities are handling it, Dad. There’s nothing you could do here. In fact, you might just make things worse.”

“But—”

“Do you really think she’d want you here? She barely tolerates me.” When he inhaled sharply, she knew he got the message.

“You’re right, of course.”

“Look, Dad, you and Mom ended things years ago. Why open up old wounds?”

He sighed into the phone. “True enough.” He paused. “How much longer do you think you’ll be?”

“I booked my room for another three nights. That should do it.”

“Be careful, Dre.”

“Mom’s the one in danger—not me.”

He chuckled. “Sarah will land on her feet. She always does. It’s you I’m worried about.”

“I’ll be fine,” she assured him, and ended the call. She looked around, wondering if the person responsible for the fires was in the milling crowd. She shivered, unnerved by the thought, and dropped her cell phone into her shoulder bag.

Dre had just rejoined her mother when Aidan rounded the side of the ambulance.

Removing his white safety helmet, he braced it under his arm, and nodded at Sarah. “You up to answering a few questions?”

“I suppose,” she answered, raising the oxygen mask. When Dre made a sound of protest, Sarah glared at her. “I can’t talk with that fucking thing over my mouth, so give it a rest.” She scowled at Aidan. “Let’s get this over with.”

“Tell me what happened this morning,” Aidan prompted.

“Well…Dre and I got to the house sometime after ten, I think,” Sarah began, sounding hoarse. “We had a look at the damage in the kitchen, and then she left. I was really tired, so I thought I’d lie down for a bit.”

Dre felt a momentary qualm. She shouldn’t have left her mother alone.

Sarah coughed, clearing her throat. “I was upstairs in my bedroom when I heard a noise downstairs.”

“What kind of noise?” Aidan shifted his helmet and stepped closer.

“How the hell should I know?” Sarah grimaced. “It was just a noise. My head was splitting, and I was groggy, so at first I wasn’t even sure I’d heard right.”

“What did you do?” Aidan asked.

“I thought it might be one of my boarders.” Sarah paused, gasping a little for breath. “So I grabbed a housecoat and went downstairs to have a look.
